The environmental technology course is usually structured as a 1-subject Bachelor course. You can then also complete the Master of Science Environmental Technology in the 1-subject Master’s course.
Mechanics, mathematics, chemistry and physics form the basis of the course. Depending on the university or college, you will find different focus areas in the environmental technology course, some of which are freely selectable. At the Ruhr University in Bochum, for example, you can choose between subjects from the fields of sustainable process and environmental technology or environmental planning. The latter area is more oriented towards civil engineering, while in the first area you will be confronted with typical subjects of mechanical engineering. As an environmental technician, you will find jobs in many industries and positions, for example in the field of water treatment and wastewater management, renewable energies or power plant technology. The uses are numerous and are well paid for. A university graduate with a master’s degree can expect an annual starting salary of € 38,000 ¹ to € 45,000 ¹, depending on the specialization and the branch. After more than five years of work, an engineer in this field earns around € 60,000 ¹.
The opportunities for advancement after graduation depend heavily on the institution or company in which you later find a job. Your personal skills also influence your chances of advancement. Soft skills in particular are a factor that should not be underestimated if you want to develop from a clerical engineer to a manager.
Where can I study environmental technology?
Only a few technical colleges and universities in Germany offer a pure environmental engineering degree. However, some universities offer you the opportunity to deal with environmental technology as part of a civil engineering degree.
