Why are these tests important for Brick House Construction?
Different types of tests are carried out on bricks to check the quality of bricks for construction and structural usage. Tests on bricks are carried out both on the construction site and in the laboratory. Bricks are the oldest and most important building materials because of their durability, reliability, strength, and inexpensiveness.
In order to produce a good structure quality, high-quality materials are required. To decide the quality of the materials, some tests are to be carried out on bricks. The most important or basic tests that are required to determine the suitability of bricks for construction and structural purposes are discussed below.
Absorption test on bricks
The absorption test is performed on bricks to determine the amount of moisture content that is absorbed by Bricks in extreme conditions. In this test, dry stone samples are taken and weighed. After dry Weigh these bricks are placed in the water fully immersed for a period of 24 hours.
Then Weigh the wet bricks and record their final weights. Finally, The difference between the dry and wet masses indicates the amount of water absorbed by the bricks. For a good quality brick, The absorption should not exceed 20% of the dry brick weight.
Compression Crushing strength or compressive strength test on bricks
The breaking strength of bricks is determined by placing bricks in a compression testing machine like a universal testing machine (UTM). Make sure that the frog of the brick is filled with mortar. After placing the brick in the compression testing machine, apply load on it gradually until the brick breaks.
Note the value of the breaking load and determine the compressive strength of the brick. The minimum breaking strength of the brick is 3.50N / mm2. If it is less than 3.50 N / mm2 then it is not recommended for Construction purposes.
Hardness testing on bricks
A good brick should be able to withstand scratches against sharp objects. So, a sharp tool or fingernail is used to make scratches on bricks. If the nail or sharp edge can’t produce any scratch mark on the brick, it is said to be a hard brick. Also, check the Vebe test on concrete.
Shape and size test on bricks also known as dimension tolerance test
The shape and size of the bricks are very important. All bricks used for construction
should be the same size. The manufactured shape of bricks should be purely rectangular with well-defined sharp edges.
The standard stone size consists of length x width x height of 19 cm x 9 cm x 9 cm. In order to do this test, choose 20 stones at random from the stone group and stack them along their length, width and height and compare. So if all the bricks are of a similar size, then they are suitable for construction jobs.
Efflorescence test on bricks
A good-quality brick should not contain soluble salts. If soluble salts are present, then It leads to the appearance of efflorescence on brick surfaces. Fairly used To find out the presence of soluble salts in a brick.
Place the brick in a water bath for 24 hours and dry in the shade. After drying, observe the brick surface thoroughly. If there is any white or gray build-up of paint, then it does contain soluble salts and is not useful for construction.
